Twin Arches Loop: A Big Reward Day Hike in Big South Fork

The Twin Arches Loop in Big South Fork National Recreation Area is one of the most iconic day hikes in the entire region. It is a perfect choice if you want a short but unforgettable trail that delivers huge payoff.

Trail Overview

The loop is roughly 4.5 miles, depending on the route you take, and it’s considered moderate. Most hikers start from the Twin Arches Trailhead off Divide Road. You can do the loop clockwise or counterclockwise, but most people visit the arches first and then continue on.

The Arches Themselves

The highlights are North Arch and South Arch, two of the largest natural sandstone arches in the eastern United States.

• North Arch is the larger of the two and absolutely massive, with a span of about 93 feet and a clearance around 62 feet.

• South Arch is slightly smaller but still impressive, and the two sit very close together, connected by a short trail and overlook area.

Standing underneath them feels like walking into a cathedral carved by wind and time.

Trail Experience

You start by going down a wooden staircase into a cool, shaded forest that feels almost prehistoric. The arches appear suddenly and dramatically at the bottom. After exploring them, the loop continues across ridgelines, through hemlock groves and rocky outcrops, and past remnants of old homesteads. Expect:

• Short but steep stair sections

• A mix of soft forest floor and sandstone ledges

• Plenty of shade

• Minimal crowds compared to the Smokies

Best Time to Hike

• Fall for color

• Winter for views through the bare trees

• Spring for wildflowers and clear air

• Summer can be humid, but the arches area stays cool

Good to Know

• Dogs are allowed on leash.

• The trailhead has restrooms.

• Cell service is limited.

• Wear sturdy shoes, especially around the rock and root sections.

Why It’s Worth It

It’s the best “big reward for a small effort” hike in Big South Fork. You get world class geology, quiet forest, and a real sense of exploration without needing to commit to an all day trek.

Be sure to stop by Big South Fork Brewing for a beer after!
